PlatteForum welcomes Spanish Artist, Raquel Meyers, for a summer artist residency culminating in an exhibition opening on July 29th at the organization’s new Annex Gallery on TAXI Campus 3575 Ringsby Ct. #103, Denver, CO 80216.

Raquel Meyers hails from Bilbao, Spain, and will be working with PlatteForum’s high school ArtLab Interns to create the exhibition Concrete Redundancy. ArtLab Interns and Meyers will examine the effects the pandemic has had on us all, find redundancies, delete the unnecessary, and reimagine a better, more interconnected future. Students will create sound pieces, 8-bit animations, and zines using obsolete technology and learning techniques that Meyers employs like 8-bit animation, frottage, graphic notations, teletext, etc.

Meyers's work has been featured at Meow Wolf Denver, International Teletext Art Festival ITAF, Shibuya Pixel Art, Supernova Digital Animation Festival, Arts Electronica, Transmediale, among others.

Meyers calls her practice KYBDslöjd (mecanografía expandida) defined roughly as manual skill with a keyboard. Meyers says: “It is not a mere arbitrary intervention but is based on and refers to the typewriter, Concrete Poetry, Demoscene and Brutalism. The typewriter contributes to the execution, while poetry contributes to a system, a brutal language that should be learned. We live in a digital era and no one is free from paradoxes.” Meyers is interested in the visual symbolism of Brutalist Architecture in Denver, and how it can affect the people who live in its large concrete shadows. Meyers coordinated a tour of Brutalist Architecture in Denver with ArtLab, allowing them to connect the visuals brutalism invokes with the raw, even dystopian look that pixel art invokes. You can view the work that Raquel Meyers and ArtLab Interns create together during this summer session at the opening on July 29th, 2022, from 6-9 pm, at PlatteForum’s Annex Gallery space 3575 Ringsby Ct. or by visiting the gallery during the following times:
