DATELINE is pleased to announce our first solo exhibition of the year with Somewhere Nowhere.
María Staffeld is a multidisciplinary Dominican artist whose work explores identity and the psychological effects of color and form interaction in the form of sculpture, illustration, and painting. Maria was born in the Dominican Republic, and shortly moved to Barcelona, Spain, where her love for the arts emerged. Influenced by both, she developed her artistic language.
My practice is a fabrication of re-imagined places and memories. The forms are both surreal yet minimalistic. I recreate elements from both my home and wilderness, merging everyday objects with patterns and textures from both the past and present. The approach I take in painting and sculpture has been influenced by ancient history, Spanish colonial architecture, and contemporary interior design. All in all, I thrive on capturing beauty in simplicity and playful forms. Organic lines and soft edges are concentrated by rough surfaces; these biomorphic forms emerge from flat planes and geometric compositions. I establish boundaries then break away using bright colors, swirls, mismatched patterns, and uncanny imagery. Cats, both domestic and wild, reappear in my work alongside a young female figure, unhinged by the expectations of societal norms.
