Opening on First Friday, February 7th from 6pm to 9pm, "Reclaiming the Table" is the work of Clay Leonard. The artist earned his undergraduate degree in ceramics at Adrian College and his master degree at Bowling Green State University. Currently he is an assistant professor at University of Houston-Clear Lake.
The focus of Leonard's ceramic work is tableware and utilitarian objects. Early childhood memories are of dining with family and friends engaging in conversation around the dinner table. He is drawn to the rich cultural heritage of functional ceramics as ritual and uses it as a reference for his contemporary interpretation useable ceramics.
His ceramic work is sculptural and both the form and surface are minimal in interpretation. Designing work for the tabletop offers many challenges, and he has chosen a path of pristine design, and crisp lines, yet is nuanced with softness and subtleness. "Repetition plays a significant role, as I utilize the stacking and interaction of multiple forms to mimic the intent of the work through form and surface while making connections to mass production and social interactions. My current body of work draws upon this strength and utilizes my communal vessel forms to reinforce the social significance of this dwindling tradition."
Plinth Gallery curator Jonathan Kaplan describes Clay Leonard's tableware as "a fresh interpretation of ceramic vessels for the table-top that "reclaims the table."
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 12–5pm Thursday–Saturday and by appointment. For further information, please call 303 295-0717 or contact the gallery at firstname.lastname@example.org.
