Join memoirist, poet, and translator Rajiv Mohabir for a reading and conversation celebrating the launch of Banbas/Exile. Drawing on stories and songs passed down by his grandmother, Mohabir reimagines the ancient Hindu epic Ramayan through the experiences of his Guyanese ancestors, generations of Indian indentured laborers, and the diasporic communities shaped by exile.
Blending poetry, stories, songs, and reflective prose, the collection draws on Creole, Caribbean Hindustani, and English to explore ancestry, cultural memory, displacement, and the search for belonging across difference.
Mohabir is the author of five poetry collections, most recently Seabeast. Advance book preorders are encouraged, as copies cannot be guaranteed at the event.
