10 Local Artists Receiving $50,000 to Transform Two Uplands-Owned Warehouses in Five Points into Immersive Art Installations

(August 20, 2024)

RiNo Art District announces the 10 artists selected to participate in the third year of its ‘NO VACANCY’ artist residency program, which kicks off in August and runs through Oct. 6.

This year’s ‘NO VACANCY’ program will take over two vacant Five Points warehouses, providing 10 local artists with $5,000 stipends to transform the buildings at 3911 and 3925 Walnut Street into immersive art installations, including performance art, digital media, and more. The spaces are being donated for use by owner Uplands Real Estate Partners, which is planning future development on the site.

Since both spaces are slated for future demolition, artists are given virtually unlimited creative freedom to push their craft and breathe new life into the buildings. The program will culminate in several to-be- announced artist-led activations throughout the residency, including an opening to celebrate the final installation on Oct. 5. All programming announcements will be shared on the residency Instagram channel, @novacancyrino.

“'NO VACANCY' is an example of the power of collaboration and creative experimentation, embodying the dynamic spirit of the RiNo Art District and showcasing what happens when art, community, and property owners come together,” said Alye Sharp, Executive Director of RiNo Art District. “As we enter the third year of 'NO VACANCY,' we're thrilled to see the program continue to evolve and can’t wait to see what this year's artists will bring to the table.”

Artists were selected by a committee of past ‘NO VACANCY’ artists, community-driven artists, RiNo Art District board members and staff through a competitive application process which drew nearly 200 applicants. Artists were selected based on strength of their respective proposals, focus on collaboration, desire to develop their practice, overall artistic diversity, and interactivity with the community.

The ten artists selected for ‘NO VACANCY’ include:

“This is the epicenter for arts and creativity in Denver, and the ‘NO VACANCY’ program exemplifies the spirit of the neighborhood,” said Mike Fietkiewicz with Uplands Real Estate Partners. “As developers with a long-term commitment to the vitality of this community, we are thrilled to partner with RiNo Art District to help ensure RiNo remains a place where art is made.” Follow @novacancyrino on Instagram to get updates and learn more about this year’s artists.
