ABOUT EVALO
In African societies, the passage from adolescence to adulthood is marked by a number of rites. In Kabyè country, the initiation of young boys is called Evala, and the young initiate is called Evalo. This initiation, which begins in March, culminates in July with the week-long Evala festival, during which the young initiates compete against each other. It's an occasion for demonstrating strength, courage and bravery. (Runtime is about 45 minutes)

WHAT MAKES EVALO UNIQUE
Made in Africa by Africans - This film was made by filmmakers in the Togalize community. With a very modest budget, but with a lot of heart, the Askkanwii filmmaking team saw this project from concept to completion. They approached the making of this film with authenticity and hope to continue to showcase interesting traditions that make their own communities special. It was filmed in French and the dialect of the Kabyè people, and translated by members of the Askkanwii team.
