Plinth Gallery presents an exhibition of ceramic work by gallery curator and celebrated ceramic artist Jonathan Kaplan, on view this summer.

Kaplan brings more than 50 years of experience in the ceramics field to this exhibition, drawing on a career as an educator, designer, author, potter, and maker. His work is deeply influenced by architecture and geometry, exploring how repeated forms and structural systems can shape both objects and ideas.

Using slip-casting and hand-assembled construction, Kaplan creates ceramic pieces composed of multiple carefully crafted parts. Inspired by concepts from Christopher Alexander’s A Pattern Language, the work reflects a thoughtful approach to structure, rhythm, and design—combining precision with experimentation.

This newest body of work continues Kaplan’s ongoing exploration of teapots, transforming the familiar functional object into forms that range from traditional to abstract. Balancing sculptural presence with a strong sense of craft, the exhibition highlights Kaplan’s ability to reinvent and refine his practice while remaining grounded in ceramics’ rich history.
