For our October 2024 exhibition, Plinth Gallery is pleased to present the work of ceramic artist Shelley Schreiber. The artist resides in Denver and is a partner and co-director of Continuum Art Studios.

Schreiber’s ceramic work straddles the fence between functional and sculptural. The artist’s decorative/”functional” pieces are wheel-thrown or wheel-thrown and altered with hand-built components. Her intent in making wheel-thrown work is both the joy of the process and to make exhibition quality pieces rather than a result that is strictly utilitarian.

Her sculptural work is slab or coil built and focuses on a harmony between the physical materials, critical thinking and inner contemplation. Most times it refers to either an abstraction of the figure or abstract ideas with a minimalist bent. Integral to the artists approach in making both utilitarian and sculptural work is form, with surface as a compliment.

After working part time in ceramics while she pursued a professional career in international relations, Shreiber became a full-time artist many years ago. In addition to her own studio practice and active membership in a ceramics co-op, she taught wheel throwing and was the ceramics studio manager at a local continuing education arts institution.

Schreiber’s exhibition “Straddling the Fence” opens at Plinth Gallery First Friday October 4 from 6pm-9pm. The exhibition will be on view until October 25. For further information, contact Plinth Gallery at 303 295-0717.
