First architectural ceramic mural in RiNo and first 3 dimensional ceramic installation included in CrushWalls.

Plinth Gallery ceramic artist and curator Jonathan Kaplan and architectural ceramic artist Nan Kitchens were selected participants in the CrushWalls 2018 that concluded on September 9th in The River North Art District. The project was to design, fabricate and install the first architectural ceramic mural in RiNo. It was also the first time a 3 dimensional ceramic installation was included in CrushWalls.

"Archway" is composed of 101 individually hand sculpted and glazed ceramic components totaling approximately 30 square feet. Covering the exterior gateway to the gallery courtyard, this installation began with 600 pounds of raw clay that was then formed into large thick slabs that were hand sculpted and sectioned into individual pieces. These pieces were then separately glazed with combinations of 30 ceramic glazes and fired to 2160 degrees F. The resulting polychromed mural is an interpretation of the RiNo Neighborhood and the artists' particular style.

Florida ceramic artist Nan Kitchens is a specialist in designing and creating large architectural ceramic installations for both interior and exterior environments. Previous projects can be viewed on the artist's website nankitchensceramics.com

Please join us on First Friday November 2 from 6pm-9pm to view this installation and the gallery opening of our final exhibition of the year, "New Ceramic Work" by artist Jim Connell.

Both exhibitions are free and open to the public. Please contact the gallery for further information gallery@plinthgallery.com
