ABOUT
Detritivore - an organism which feeds on dead material
Lost in nostalgia, staring at the chrysalis… awaiting the butterfly within plasticine dreams
Detritivores in the Depths is a collaborative show from Denver based artists Kyle Singer and Brandon Vargas. It is a meditation on the self-recycling process, the breaking down of dead ideas and myths in ourselves to make a fertile ground for a truly progressive future. It is a celebration of all things childish, a flirtation with nostalgia, optimism, and the sinking feeling that all paths in the future have been decided. Emphasizing the power of accumulation and the cycle of breakdown and renewal through works that evoke fungus, animals, and mythical iconography, the show is a playful exploration on each artist’s relationship with changing internal motivation and goals.
BIOS
Kyle Vincent Singer born in Tacoma, WA but raised in a suburb of Chicago. Singer graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelors of Arts and a Masters in Studio Art. He received his MFA with a focus in drawing at Colorado State University. Recipient of the CSU Highest Achievement in Visual Arts 2017. Singer’s largest permanent installation, “Sa Lawn” located Meow Wolf Denver and featured on Artnet.com. He is a current resident at Redline RiNo Artpark.
Kyle’s art investigates coping and accumulation with a maximalism flare. Using art as a way to help the brain process overstimulation within a capitalist world. Kyle’s art is metabolic and self described as “Candy Coated Abjection.” Everyday materials are employed in unconventional ways, manifesting in unique forms, reflecting a blend of biological and material interactions. Characterized by vibrant, neon growths and an emphasis on textural richness. There is an interplay of contrasting themes, evoking a sense of discomfort alongside aesthetic appeal. Living in the tension between attraction and repulsion.
Brandon Vargas is a Denver-based artist and is currently an Alto Gallery resident supported by the Redline Satellite Studio Resident program. Brandon has been shown in solo and group shows around the CO, including at Dateline, Redline, Art Gym, Alto Gallery, Bell Projects, and Emmanuel Gallery. Brandon received his BFA in Fine Arts from CU Denver in 2018.
Brandon uses mixed media and archery to create bright and colorful surrealism works. Exploring myths, memory, and interpersonal relationships, Vargas’ work is deeply narratively driven, often questioning the reflective quality of stories and what they tell us about others and ourselves and how people use them to navigate the world.
