NO VACANCY is back for a second year!

NO VACANCY 2023 is an artist residency program presented by RiNo Art District, in collaboration with EDENS and sponsored by Davis Partnership Architects. The goal is to convert an empty, soon-to-be-razed warehouse space in RiNo Art District, Denver into a group art installation and to support artists by providing them with funding and temporary physical space. In addition to the group installation, each artist will have their own area to create and do with as they please. It will be open to the public at various stages of the residency. The building and space inside is your canvas - tell us what you would do with a one-and-a-half-month residency! We’re looking for a diverse group of artists from muralists to projectionists, to performance artists, sculptors, digital artists, and beyond.

Please note that because of the nature of the building and its low level of ventilation, this program will need to be limited to ‘clean’ art such as, but not limited to, acrylic paints, light and projection installations, textile arts, and sculpture, and will EXCLUDE: aerosols; metalsmithing, welding, or anything with open flames; woodworking; and other flammable materials or materials with a high level of fumes or need for ventilation.

Program Details:

  • $8500 unrestricted stipend per artist or artist group (50% upfront, 50% at the end)
  • Five (5) one-and-a-half-month work residencies in a 9,200 square foot space in the IMAC building on Larimer St. from April 17, 2023 to May 31, 2023, with the possibility to extend through June depending on demolition timeline
  • All artists will be working in the same timeframe with separate, as well as collaborative spaces
  • Each artist is invited to contribute to the larger cumulative exhibition space; the goal of this projectis to breathe a last breath of life into a building not long for this world and installations should besite-specific and created to enhance the existing experience.
  • Highly collaborative opportunity to work with other artists

The Nitty Gritty:

  • This is a working space, not a living space
  • Artists will have access to the space between the hours of 9 AM and 11 PM seven days/week
  • Artists must be insured and must name “RiNo Art District” on the policy
  • Artists must be local to Denver metro area or willing to travel; no travel or lodging funds areavailable for this project

Outcomes/Expectations:

  • Artists will be highly encouraged to host and attend open houses and other pop-up events within the space throughout the residency (events will be by RSVP to adhere to permitting rules; RiNo will help with refreshments and other event additions as needed). RiNo Art District will host a series of open houses/events once artists’ work is complete.
  • Artists can keep or sell any of the work they create or exhibit; NO VACANCY will take no commission on sales or donations
    • We require any installation art to remain on premises through the end of the project
  • Artists must participate throughout the entire program, although there is norequirement on hours

Timeline:

  • Submissions due by Wednesday, April 5, 2023; artist selection will be made by a committee of RiNo Art District staff, board, and past NO VACANCY artists. Artists will be notified by April 10 with a move in date of April 17, 2023. Please note that this is a quick turnaround due to the nature of the opportunity to activate a building set for demolition.
